The story starts off on Christmas Eve with an old man named Arthur Kipps taking a breath of fresh air away from his family. When he returns, his family plead with him to tell them a spooky ghost story, but Arthur stubbornly refuses and ends up walking away. After this, which has obviosly brought back some terribble memories from Arthur's past, he begins to go through the spine-chilling, mysterious tale to himself. He is a 23 year old junior solicitor and is requested by his boss to attend the funeral of former-client, Mrs. Drablow. At first, young Arthur is pleased to get away from the choking fog of London, but little does he know what is awaiting him in the small town of Crythin-Gifford.
